Côte de Nuits

Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

The Côte de Nuits is a narrow limestone escarpment stretching barely 20 kilometres from Marsannay south to Corgoloin, yet it contains 24 of Burgundy's 33 Grand Cru appellations — the highest concentration of collectable red wine real estate on earth. The soils here are a precise mix of Jurassic limestone, clay, and iron-rich marl; the gradient between the forested plateau and the plain below creates the drainage and temperature differential that concentrates flavour without excess weight. Gevrey-Chambertin anchors the north with nine Grand Crus, including Chambertin itself — Napoleon's self-reported daily wine. Chambolle-Musigny offers the most perfumed expression, Musigny being the standard by which Pinot Noir is judged worldwide. Vosne-Romanée is the undisputed prestige epicentre: seven Grand Crus in a single village, anchored by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. At auction, the Côte de Nuits drives the top end of the Burgundy market with disproportionate ferocity — DRC, Leroy, Rousseau, and Mugnier lots routinely attract competitive bidding from across Asia, the US, and Europe. The 2015, 2019, and 2023 vintages currently command the highest premiums.

Côte de Nuits
01

The Côte de Nuits contains 24 of Burgundy's 33 Grand Cru appellations, all producing red Pinot Noir — the highest density of Grand Cru red wine terroir in the world.

02

Vosne-Romanée village hosts seven Grand Cru appellations in less than 1 km², including Romanée-Conti (1.8 ha) and La Tâche (6 ha), both monopoles of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti.

03

Gevrey-Chambertin's nine Grand Crus account for just 87 hectares of total production; Napoleon famously drank Chambertin daily and would accept no substitute in the field.

04

Auction premiums for top Côte de Nuits domaines (DRC, Leroy, Rousseau) have outpaced the broader Burgundy index in every year since 2015, driven by institutional and collector demand from Asia and the US.

In the Glass

Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir tends toward structure and intensity — dark cherry and blackberry fruit over a spine of firm tannin, with forest floor, iron, and game notes that emerge with age. Gevrey-Chambertin is the most powerful; Chambolle-Musigny the most perfumed and silky; Vosne-Romanée sits between them, adding spice and extraordinary length.
