Morey-Saint-Denis
Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices
Morey-Saint-Denis is the smallest and least well-known of the great Côte de Nuits villages, sandwiched between the power of Gevrey-Chambertin to the north and the elegance of Chambolle-Musigny to the south. Despite its modest size and lower profile, it contains five Grand Crus — the most per surface area of any commune in Burgundy — including Clos de la Roche (16.9 ha), which produces arguably the most complex and age-worthy red wines in the village. The village gave its name the addition of 'Saint-Denis' from the Clos Saint-Denis Grand Cru in 1927. Clos des Lambrays (8.84 ha) is a near-monopole that was elevated to Grand Cru only in 1981, and was acquired by LVMH in 2014. Clos de Tart (7.53 ha), a former monopole until a 2017 sale to Pinault Family, is now being revived under François Pinault. Domaine Dujac and Domaine Ponsot anchor the prestige tier, with Dujac's whole-cluster winemaking producing wines of uncommon aromatic purity.
In the Glass
Morey-Saint-Denis occupies a stylistic middle ground between Gevrey-Chambertin and Chambolle-Musigny — combining the structural depth and tannic backbone of Gevrey with the floral delicacy and fine texture of Chambolle. Clos de la Roche is the most powerful and mineral; Clos Saint-Denis more aromatic and elegant. Dujac's whole-cluster approach introduces stems-derived spice, wild cherry, and remarkable aromatic lift across all its Morey holdings.
