Clos Saint-Denis

Morey-Saint-Denis · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Clos Saint-Denis is a 6.62-hectare Grand Cru that gave its name to the village of Morey in 1927, when the commune appended 'Saint-Denis' to its name to capitalise on the appellation's reputation — one of the few cases in Burgundy where a village renamed itself after a Grand Cru. The climat occupies a mid-slope position to the north of Clos de la Roche, with similar thin limestone and marl soils but a slightly different aspect that produces wines of somewhat greater aromatic elegance and earlier approachability. Domaine Dujac holds the largest parcel (1.72 ha) and produces the most celebrated and sought-after expression — a whole-cluster, aromatic interpretation that is often described as one of the most 'Chambolle-like' wines in Morey. Domaine Bertagna, Domaine Charlopin, and Domaine Ponsot contribute further expressions of varying character. Leroy's small holding here, as elsewhere in the Côte de Nuits, commands exceptional prices at auction.

Clos Saint-Denis
01

Clos Saint-Denis (6.62 ha) is the only Grand Cru in Burgundy that gave its name to an entire village — Morey added 'Saint-Denis' to its name in 1927 to benefit from the appellation's prestige.

02

Domaine Dujac's 1.72 ha holding produces the most acclaimed expression — a whole-cluster, transparently aromatic Clos Saint-Denis that is among the most elegant and sought-after wines in Morey.

03

The climat has a slightly more northerly aspect than Clos de la Roche, contributing to greater aromatic lift and earlier approachability — wines typically showing their character 2–3 years earlier than the more structured Clos de la Roche.

04

Despite its historic status in giving its name to the village, Clos Saint-Denis remains one of the more undervalued Grand Crus in the Côte de Nuits at auction, offering compelling quality for its price tier.

In the Glass

Clos Saint-Denis leans toward aromatic elegance in the Morey context: red cherry, raspberry, violet, and dried rose petal over a fine-grained tannic structure and bright mineral acidity. Less structured and powerful than Clos de la Roche, it offers earlier accessibility and a more overtly perfumed character. Dujac's version is the most aromatic and transparent, while Ponsot's adds more structure and mineral depth from older vines.
