Clos de la Roche

Morey-Saint-Denis · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Clos de la Roche is the largest Grand Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis at 16.9 hectares and widely considered the finest appellation in the village, producing wines of power, complexity, and extraordinary longevity. The climat occupies a prime mid-slope position with thin, stony, well-drained limestone and clay-marl soils that concentrate flavour without excess weight. Domaine Ponsot holds the most famous parcel — including old vines planted before phylloxera in parts of the 'Monts Luisants' section — and their Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes is among the most celebrated old-vine cuvées in Burgundy. Domaine Dujac (1.95 ha) produces a whole-cluster, more aromatic interpretation that contrasts beautifully with Ponsot's more structured, traditional approach. Domaine Hubert Lignier and Domaine Pierre Amiot contribute further high-quality expressions. At auction, Clos de la Roche represents excellent value in the Côte de Nuits Grand Cru tier, offering similar complexity to Gevrey's finest at more accessible prices.

Clos de la Roche
01

Clos de la Roche (16.9 ha) is the largest and most powerful Grand Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis, producing wines that can rival Chambertin in depth and longevity in the finest vintages.

02

Domaine Ponsot's 'Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes' from pre-phylloxera old vines is one of the most celebrated age-worthy cuvées in the entire Côte de Nuits, with exceptional bottles from 1971 and 1978 still evolving.

03

Domaine Dujac's 1.95 ha holding produces a contrasting whole-cluster, aromatic interpretation — one of the most debated stylistic contrasts in Burgundy alongside Ponsot's traditional élevage.

04

The appellation offers compelling relative value in the Grand Cru tier — similar soil geology and exposition to the northern Gevrey Grand Crus but typically 20–35% less expensive at auction.

Clos de la Roche sits between the power of Gevrey-Chambertin and the delicacy of Chambolle-Musigny: dark cherry, blackberry, and plum fruit over iron, earth, and game, with a firm but supple tannic backbone. Ponsot's old-vine version adds a distinctive spice, mineral, and wild herb dimension that evolves for decades. Dujac's whole-cluster approach introduces stems-derived structure and aromatic lift, producing a more immediately perfumed and accessible wine.
