Clos des Lambrays

Morey-Saint-Denis · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Clos des Lambrays is an 8.84-hectare Grand Cru in Morey-Saint-Denis with a history of near-monopole ownership and dramatic institutional change. The vineyard was elevated to Grand Cru status only in 1981 — the most recent promotion in Burgundy's classification system — after a period of neglect under multiple co-owners. Domaine des Lambrays was assembled into a single private ownership in the 1980s, which transformed the wine's consistency and quality. In 2014, the domain was acquired by LVMH (owner of Château Cheval Blanc and other luxury assets), providing investment for cellar renovation and generating renewed collector and auction interest. The vineyard climbs from the village level to the forest edge on a single continuous strip of limestone and clay-marl soils, producing wines that combine aromatic elegance with a firm, mineral structure. The monopole-like character of the estate gives it a distinctive single-producer narrative rarely found in Burgundy's Grand Cru tier.

Clos des Lambrays
01

Clos des Lambrays (8.84 ha) was elevated to Grand Cru status in 1981 — the last Grand Cru promotion in Burgundy — after decades of fragmented ownership and inconsistent quality.

02

The estate functions as a near-monopole: Domaine des Lambrays owns all but 0.18 ha, giving it a singular ownership profile unusual among Burgundy's multi-owner Grand Crus.

03

The 2014 acquisition by LVMH brought significant cellar investment and increased international visibility, generating renewed auction interest in back-vintages and higher prices for recent releases.

04

The vineyard runs as a continuous strip from the village level up to the forest edge — one of the few Côte de Nuits Grand Crus with a complete slope cross-section in a single ownership.

Clos des Lambrays produces a style that sits between the power of Clos de la Roche and the elegance of Clos Saint-Denis: dark cherry, redcurrant, and violet fruit over a structured, mineral backbone with fine-grained tannin. The wines are more immediately approachable than Clos de la Roche, with a characteristic spice and floral note that reflects the limestone-dominant soils. Post-LVMH vintages show greater consistency and depth, with more expressive fruit and a longer, cleaner finish.
