Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot is the leading estate in Morey-Saint-Denis, established in 1872 and recognised above all for the most extensive holding in Clos de la Roche Grand Cru — approximately 3.3 hectares, making it the vineyard's dominant proprietor. The estate gained international notoriety in 2008 when Laurent Ponsot flew to New York to halt an Acker auction containing fabricated bottles of Ponsot wines, his detective work proving instrumental in the eventual prosecution of fraudster Rudy Kurniawan. Rose Ponsot now leads the domaine after Laurent's departure. The winemaking philosophy is deliberately non-interventionist: wild yeast fermentation, no fining or filtration, and a signature avoidance of new oak — Ponsot was among the first Burgundy producers to reject new oak entirely. Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes, from vines planted between 1913 and 1952, is the domaine's benchmark: a wine of enormous structure and complexity that ages for 30 or more years, regularly commanding $400–$900 per bottle at auction.

Domaine Ponsot owns approximately 3.3 hectares of Clos de la Roche Grand Cru — the largest single holding in this 16-hectare vineyard — with the Vieilles Vignes cuvée drawn from vines planted between 1913 and 1952.
In 2008, Laurent Ponsot personally flew to New York to have fabricated Ponsot bottles pulled from an Acker auction; his investigation was pivotal in the FBI's case against forger Rudy Kurniawan, convicted in 2013.
Ponsot uses zero new oak across all wines, relying instead on old foudres and demi-muids; this approach was considered radical in the 1970s but is now widely imitated as a method to preserve primary fruit and terroir character.
The domaine added security fingerprinting of bottles with unique bubble codes in 2009 — a direct response to the counterfeiting scandal, and one of the first estates in Burgundy to implement bottle authentication technology.

In the Glass

Ponsot wines are among the most age-worthy in Burgundy — austere and almost severe in youth, with a mineral austerity that gradually opens to reveal extraordinary layers of dark cherry, earth, spice, and wild herbs. Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes is the flagship: iron, truffle, and dark fruit on the nose, with a structured palate that requires at least a decade before showing its best. Chambertin shows more opulence; Griotte-Chambertin the most fragrant.
