Nuits-Saint-Georges

Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Nuits-Saint-Georges is the only major commune in the Côte de Nuits without a Grand Cru appellation — a geographical anomaly that has long fascinated wine historians, as its finest Premier Crus (particularly Les Saint-Georges and Les Vaucrains) easily rival Grand Cru-quality wines from neighbouring villages. The commune extends over 2 km of hillside from the village of Nuits itself south to Prémeaux-Prissey, where several of the most celebrated lieux-dits are found: Clos de la Maréchale, Clos des Forêts Saint-Georges, and Clos des Corvées. The soils shift from iron-rich clay and marl in the north to more limestone-dominant terrain in the south around Prémeaux, giving the wines of Nuits their characteristic tannic grip and earthy depth. Domaine Henri Gouges is the historic standard-bearer — the only producer known to have maintained their original pre-phylloxera Pinot Blanc vines for a rare white Premier Cru. Domaine Méo-Camuzet and Maison Leroy have elevated the prestige tier significantly over the past three decades.

Nuits-Saint-Georges
01

Nuits-Saint-Georges is uniquely the only major Côte de Nuits commune without a Grand Cru appellation, despite producing Les Saint-Georges and Les Vaucrains — Premier Crus widely considered Grand Cru equivalent in quality.

02

Les Saint-Georges (8 ha) takes its name from the village itself and is the most historically prestigious Premier Cru in Nuits, farmed by Domaine Henri Gouges, Domaine de l'Arlot, and Robert Chevillon.

03

Domaine Henri Gouges maintains a small block of Pinot Blanc (mutated from Pinot Noir) in Les Perrières, producing one of the rarest white Premier Crus in the entire Côte de Nuits.

04

The southern part of the appellation around Prémeaux-Prissey contains several monopole or near-monopole Premier Crus (Clos de la Maréchale — Faiveley; Clos des Forêts — de l'Arlot) offering excellent consistency across vintages.

In the Glass

Nuits-Saint-Georges Pinot Noir is the earthiest and most tannic expression in the Côte de Nuits village tier: dark cherry, blackberry, and dried rose over iron, earth, and savoury forest floor notes. The tannins are firmer and more structured than Chambolle or Vosne, demanding patience from the cellar. With age (typically 8–15 years for Premier Crus), the wines develop extraordinary savouriness, complexity, and the characteristic 'beeswax' note that distinguishes old-vine Nuits.
