Gevrey-Chambertin

Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Gevrey-Chambertin is the northernmost major commune of the Côte de Nuits and the most prolific producer of Grand Cru red Burgundy — nine Grand Crus in a single village, anchored by Chambertin (12.9 ha) and Chambertin Clos de Bèze (15.4 ha), the two appellations that Napoleon Bonaparte famously drank daily and would accept no substitute in the field. The village's soils shift from the richer, more argillaceous lower slopes to a leaner, more limestone-dominant band in the Grand Cru mid-slope, producing wines of unusual concentration and structure. Domaine Armand Rousseau is the defining producer: his holdings across Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Clos Saint-Jacques, and Cazetiers represent the gold standard for the village. Domaine Denis Mortet, Domaine Dugat-Py, Domaine Rossignol-Trapet, and Joseph Roty complete the elite tier. Gevrey is unusual in that its village and Premier Cru wines at auction can also offer exceptional value relative to the Grand Crus.

Gevrey-Chambertin
01

Gevrey-Chambertin contains nine Grand Cru appellations — more than any other village in Burgundy — totalling approximately 87 hectares of the finest Pinot Noir terroir.

02

Chambertin (12.9 ha) is considered the 'King of Burgundy'; Napoleon reportedly drank it daily, and Rousseau's parcel (~2.15 ha) is the benchmark expression that collectors pursue above all others.

03

Chambertin Clos de Bèze is the only other Grand Cru appellation in Burgundy allowed to label itself as 'Chambertin' — it sits directly north of Chambertin on equally prestigious limestone-clay soils.

04

Clos Saint-Jacques Premier Cru, farmed by Rousseau, Leroy, and Esmonin, routinely surpasses many Grand Crus in auction prices — it is widely considered the finest Premier Cru in the Côte de Nuits.

In the Glass

Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir is the most structured and powerful expression in the Côte de Nuits: deep ruby in colour, with blackberry, dark cherry, and plum fruit over a backbone of firm tannin. The Grand Crus add game, iron, truffle, and leather complexity with age, developing extraordinary savoury depth over 10–25 years in bottle. The village wines are more approachable but retain the characteristic grip and weight that defines this commune.
