Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Chambertin is a 12.9-hectare Grand Cru at the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin and one of the most historically celebrated vineyards in Burgundy — widely known as the 'King of Burgundy', a title it shares with Chambertin Clos de Bèze directly to its north. Napoleon Bonaparte reportedly drank Chambertin daily and would accept no substitute during his campaigns. The climat occupies a mid-slope position on a thin band of Bajocian limestone with iron-rich clay, delivering wines of extraordinary power, structure, and longevity. Domaine Armand Rousseau holds the largest parcel (~2.15 ha) and produces the definitive modern expression: precise, structured, and built for decades of cellaring. Domaine Leroy (0.5 ha) produces a more concentrated, lower-yield version that rivals Rousseau on the secondary market at even higher prices. Denis Bachelet's old-vine parcel and Rossignol-Trapet's holdings contribute additional critical mass.

Chambertin
01

Chambertin (12.9 ha) is Burgundy's most historically famous Grand Cru — Napoleon's daily wine — and the standard against which all powerful Pinot Noir is measured.

02

Domaine Armand Rousseau holds approximately 2.15 ha and produces the benchmark modern Chambertin: precisely structured, intense, and built for 20–30 years of cellaring in great vintages.

03

Domaine Leroy's Chambertin (0.5 ha) regularly surpasses $5,000 per bottle at auction, reflecting the combination of extreme scarcity and Lalou Bize-Leroy's ultra-low yields and biodynamic farming.

04

The Chambertin appellation has no 'Clos' designation — unlike Clos de Bèze, which borders it to the north — and may not label itself as Chambertin Clos de Bèze; the inverse is permitted.

Chambertin at its finest is Pinot Noir of extraordinary depth and power: dense dark cherry and cassis fruit over iron, tar, game, and truffle, with a firm yet ripe tannic structure that needs a decade to begin unfolding. Rousseau's version emphasises precision and mineral linearity; Leroy's adds sheer concentration and an almost Romanée-Conti-like exotic spice. The best examples from top vintages (1990, 1999, 2005, 2015) will age for 40+ years.
