Chambertin Clos de Bèze

Gevrey-Chambertin · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Chambertin Clos de Bèze is a 15.4-hectare Grand Cru lying directly north of Chambertin in Gevrey-Chambertin, and is the only Grand Cru in Burgundy permitted to label its wine as either 'Chambertin Clos de Bèze' or simply 'Chambertin' — though Chambertin cannot use the Clos de Bèze designation in return. The vineyard was originally planted by the monks of the Abbey of Bèze in the 7th century, making it one of the oldest documented wine-producing sites in Burgundy. The soils are thinner and more limestone-dominant than Chambertin to the south, typically producing wines of greater finesse, aromatic lift, and earlier approachability, though they can match Chambertin in depth and longevity in the finest vintages. Domaine Armand Rousseau holds 1.42 ha and his Clos de Bèze is considered marginally more refined than his Chambertin; Domaine Pierre Damoy holds the largest parcel (5.36 ha), while Bruno Clair, Faiveley, and Joseph Drouhin contribute additional notable expressions.

In the Glass

Chambertin Clos de Bèze tends toward greater aromatic lift and finesse than Chambertin, with more red cherry and raspberry fruit alongside the classic iron, game, and truffle notes. The tannins are well-structured but typically finer-grained, allowing earlier enjoyment while still rewarding 15–25 years in bottle from great vintages. Rousseau's version is the epitome of refinement; Damoy's is more concentrated and needs longer cellaring.
