Griotte-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Griotte-Chambertin is the smallest Grand Cru appellation in Gevrey-Chambertin at just 5.48 hectares, lying between Chambertin and the edge of the Chapelle-Chambertin climat in the village's Grand Cru strip. The name likely derives from the griotte cherry, reflecting the wine's characteristic intensely fruited, almost sour cherry aromatic profile — one of the most distinctive in all of Gevrey. The climate is partly known for a near-monopole situation: Domaine Ponsot owns the 'Clos des Griottes' sub-parcel of approximately 3 ha and is by far the largest producer; their version, labelled as a separate cuvée, is considered the defining expression. Drouhin-Laroze and Joseph Drouhin hold smaller parcels, providing alternative interpretations. Despite its small size and limited auction volume, Griotte-Chambertin commands significant collector interest due to its unusual aromatic profile and Ponsot's extraordinary old-vine Clos.

Griotte-Chambertin
01

Griotte-Chambertin (5.48 ha) is the smallest Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin — its name references the griotte (sour cherry) that characterises the wine's most distinctive aromatic signature.

02

Domaine Ponsot owns the 'Clos des Griottes' sub-parcel (~3 ha) and is effectively the dominant producer; their old-vine cuvée is considered the reference expression for the appellation.

03

The appellation's tiny production and concentration of ownership in few hands creates genuine scarcity at auction, with bottle counts at major sales often in the single digits.

04

Griotte-Chambertin is unusual among Gevrey Grand Crus in producing a more perfumed, aromatic style closer to Chambolle-Musigny than the typical power and structure of the village.

Griotte-Chambertin is arguably the most aromatic of the Gevrey Grand Crus: intense wild cherry, kirsch, and violet dominate over lighter tannin and a more immediately accessible structure than Chambertin or Clos de Bèze. With age, the fruit concentration deepens into dried cherry, spice, and floral complexity, maintaining the distinctive cherry character that gives the appellation its name. Ponsot's version adds a layer of wild herb and mineral tension from the old vines.
