Charmes-Chambertin

Gevrey-Chambertin · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Charmes-Chambertin is the largest Grand Cru appellation in Gevrey-Chambertin at 30.83 hectares, encompassing what were historically two separate lieux-dits — Charmes (upper) and Mazoyères (lower). The appellation technically includes Mazoyères-Chambertin, though in practice almost all producers label the wine as Charmes-Chambertin regardless of the exact parcel location. The large size of the appellation and its mix of upper and lower slope positions — from thin Bajocian limestone to deeper, heavier soils near the road — produce wines of more variable quality than the smaller Gevrey Grand Crus. However, the finest expressions from Domaine Dugat-Py, Domaine Denis Mortet, Domaine Rousseau, and Joseph Roty easily rival the smaller Grand Crus in depth and complexity. Charmes also offers the most accessible price point among the Gevrey Grand Crus, making it an important entry point for collectors.

01

Charmes-Chambertin (30.83 ha) is the largest Grand Cru in Gevrey-Chambertin, comprising two formerly distinct lieux-dits — Charmes and Mazoyères — though almost all producers label the wine under the Charmes designation.

02

The large appellation size creates significant quality variation between parcels; upper-slope positions on thin Bajocian limestone produce wines closer in character to Chambertin, while lower-slope parcels are more immediately approachable.

03

Domaine Dugat-Py's old-vine parcel from vines over 80 years old produces one of the most concentrated and complex Charmes at auction, regularly exceeding $600 per bottle.

04

At its best, Charmes-Chambertin offers a silkier, more sensual style than its Gevrey Grand Cru neighbours — earning its name ('charms') through aromatic generosity rather than structural power.

Charmes-Chambertin is typically the most approachable and sensuously textured of the Gevrey Grand Crus: red cherry, raspberry, and plum fruit with a silky, supple texture and moderate tannin. The finest examples from Dugat-Py and Mortet add concentration, spice, and earthy complexity, but the hallmark of Charmes is its aromatic generosity and earlier accessibility compared to Chambertin or Clos de Bèze.
