Chambolle-Musigny

Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Chambolle-Musigny is the most perfumed and delicate village of the Côte de Nuits, producing Pinot Noir of unmatched floral refinement and silky texture. The village sits on a bed of thin limestone soils over an unusually high proportion of active chalk, which drains away excess water and imparts a distinctive lightness and transparency of fruit. Musigny (10.08 ha) is the sole Grand Cru lying entirely within Chambolle, and it is widely considered the purest expression of Pinot Noir in Burgundy — the benchmark by which the variety is judged worldwide. Bonnes-Mares (15.06 ha, with 1.52 ha in Chambolle and the rest in Morey-Saint-Denis) provides a more powerful, tannic counterpoint. The Premier Cru Les Amoureuses — bordering Musigny on the lower slope — commands prices that rival many Grand Crus and has earned the informal title of 'Grand Cru in everything but name'. Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier, Domaine Georges Roumier, and Domaine Leroy define the summit of quality.

Chambolle-Musigny
01

Musigny Grand Cru (10.08 ha) is the supreme expression of Pinot Noir in Burgundy — Comte de Vogüé farms 7.12 ha, the largest parcel, while Mugnier's 1.14 ha is considered the purest individual holding.

02

Les Amoureuses Premier Cru (5.35 ha) is widely described as 'Grand Cru in everything but name': its thin chalk and limestone soils directly border Musigny, and auction prices regularly surpass village Grand Crus from other communes.

03

Chambolle-Musigny soils contain a higher proportion of active chalk than any neighbouring village, contributing to the characteristic lightness, aromatic lift, and silky texture that defines the appellation.

04

Domaine Georges Roumier's Bonnes-Mares (1.39 ha) and Musigny (0.1 ha) are among the most sought-after allocations in Burgundy, with secondary market demand far exceeding supply.

Chambolle-Musigny Pinot Noir is characterised by extraordinary aromatic finesse: violet, rose petal, raspberry, and red cherry dominate, with a silky, almost weightless texture and fine-grained tannin. The Premier Crus — particularly Les Amoureuses and Les Charmes — add depth and persistence. Musigny in its finest expressions from Mugnier and Leroy achieves a haunting combination of delicacy and extraordinary length that evolves for decades.
