Les Amoureuses

Chambolle-Musigny · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Les Amoureuses is a 5.35-hectare Premier Cru in Chambolle-Musigny that commands prices rivalling — and in some cases exceeding — Grand Crus from across the Côte de Nuits. Lying immediately below Musigny on a gently curved mid-slope with thin limestone and chalk soils, Les Amoureuses is informally known as 'Grand Cru in everything but name.' The climat's name ('the Amoureuses' — the love-struck ones) reflects its reputation for producing the most romantically perfumed and seductive Pinot Noir in all of Burgundy. Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier (0.58 ha) produces the most celebrated expression, combining an almost Musigny-like delicacy with slightly more structure from the lower slope position. Domaine Georges Roumier (0.38 ha) produces a more concentrated, profound version. Domaine Leroy, Domaine Comte de Vogüé, and Domaine Robert Groffier contribute additional critically acclaimed expressions. At auction, bottles from Mugnier and Roumier regularly achieve $1,000–$2,000+.

Les Amoureuses
01

Les Amoureuses (5.35 ha) is Premier Cru in classification but Grand Cru in price and reputation — often described as 'Grand Cru in everything but name', with Mugnier and Roumier bottles reaching $1,500–$3,000 at auction.

02

The climat lies directly below Musigny on Chambolle's mid-slope and shares many of the same chalk and limestone soil characteristics that produce Musigny's distinctive aromatic delicacy.

03

Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier's 0.58 ha holding is considered the definitive expression — an almost Musigny-level wine combining pure red fruit, violet, and silky texture with Premier Cru-level approachability.

04

The Premier Cru classification has historically suppressed the price relative to its quality — though the secondary market has long since corrected this, making Les Amoureuses the most expensive Premier Cru in the Côte de Nuits.

In the Glass

Les Amoureuses is the most ethereal Premier Cru in Burgundy: rose petal, wild strawberry, and violet over a frame of silky fine-grained tannin and barely perceptible acidity. It is more structured and grounded than Musigny — there is a mineral, almost chalky tension on the mid-palate — but shares the same haunting aromatic lift. The finest examples from Mugnier and Roumier evolve over 10–20 years, adding dried flowers, spice, and an extraordinary mineral persistence.
