Musigny

Chambolle-Musigny · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Musigny is a 10.08-hectare Grand Cru lying at the top of the Chambolle-Musigny slope and is widely considered the 'Queen of Burgundy' — producing Pinot Noir of unmatched aromatic delicacy and ethereal texture that has no rival in the entire Côte d'Or. Unlike the powerful, structured Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, Musigny achieves its majesty through perfume, purity, and a seemingly weightless silk texture that disguises extraordinary concentration and length. Domaine Comte de Vogüé holds the largest parcel (7.12 ha) but withheld their vines from the Grand Cru appellation entirely from 1993–2013 while replanting; their return has been celebrated as one of the great recent events in Burgundy. Domaine Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier holds 1.14 ha and produces what many critics consider the purest, most transparently terroir-driven Musigny. Domaine Leroy (0.27 ha) produces perhaps the most concentrated and sought-after Musigny at auction — routinely achieving $8,000–$15,000 per bottle.

Musigny
01

Musigny (10.08 ha) is the 'Queen of Burgundy' — Pinot Noir of ethereal perfume and silky texture that many regard as the greatest expression of the variety in the world.

02

Domaine Leroy's tiny 0.27 ha parcel produces Musigny that regularly achieves $8,000–$15,000 per bottle at auction, driven by ultra-low yields of 10–15 hl/ha and extreme rarity.

03

Domaine Comte de Vogüé, the largest holder (7.12 ha), replanted extensively from 1986 and withheld their Musigny from the Grand Cru designation 1993–2013 — their 2015+ vintages mark a celebrated return to form.

04

A tiny 0.65 ha plot within Musigny is classified for white wine production (Musigny Blanc); Domaine Comte de Vogüé is the sole producer, and the wine commands Grand Cru red prices despite its rarity.

In the Glass

Musigny is the archetype of Burgundy's ethereal beauty: rose petal, violet, and wild strawberry over a virtually weightless frame of fine silk tannin and restrained acidity. What appears delicate in youth reveals extraordinary depth and persistence over time — the great Mugnier and Leroy versions evolve over 20–30 years, adding truffle, dried flowers, sandalwood, and an almost meditative mineral complexity. No other Burgundy Grand Cru achieves this combination of apparent fragility and long-term majesty.
