Bonnes-Mares

Chambolle-Musigny · Côte de Nuits · Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Bonnes-Mares is a 15.06-hectare Grand Cru appellation that straddles the boundary between Chambolle-Musigny (1.52 ha) and Morey-Saint-Denis (13.54 ha), lying at the northern extreme of the Chambolle slope. Despite its administrative association with Chambolle, the character of Bonnes-Mares is notably different from Musigny: more structured, tannic, and powerful — reflecting the heavier clay-limestone soils of the Morey-facing portion and the greater depth of the terrain. Domaine Georges Roumier holds 1.39 ha and produces the most acclaimed expression, described by critics as combining Chambolle's aromatic delicacy with a structural backbone approaching Chambertin. Domaine Comte de Vogüé owns 2.7 ha (the largest individual parcel) and produces a more concentrated, early-structured wine. Dujac, Bruno Clair, and Drouhin-Laroze contribute important secondary expressions. Bonnes-Mares offers a fascinating counterpoint to Musigny from the same village.

Bonnes-Mares
01

Bonnes-Mares (15.06 ha) straddles Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis — with only 1.52 ha in Chambolle, the majority of the appellation sits on Morey's more structured soils.

02

Domaine Georges Roumier's 1.39 ha holding produces a Bonnes-Mares that many critics consider the most complete Grand Cru in their portfolio — combining Chambolle's aromatic lift with a Morey-like tannic backbone.

03

The appellation sits north of Musigny and above the Clos de Tart, where deeper clay-limestone soils produce wines of greater body, colour density, and ageing potential than the more ethereal Musigny below.

04

Domaine Comte de Vogüé (2.7 ha — the largest single parcel) and Roumier together account for approximately 27% of the appellation, making these two estates the quality gatekeepers of Bonnes-Mares.

Bonnes-Mares is the most powerful and structured of the Chambolle Grand Crus: dark cherry, blackberry, and plum over a firm yet silky tannic structure, with violet, sous bois, and iron notes appearing with age. Compared to Musigny, it is more substantial and slower to evolve — requiring 10–15 years from great vintages to show its full complexity. Roumier's version adds an extraordinary aromatic dimension that bridges both communes.
