Domaine Georges Roumier

Domaine Georges Roumier is one of the great reference points for Chambolle-Musigny, founded in 1924 when Georges Roumier married into the Quanquin family's vineyards and expanded via the métayage sharecropping system. After Georges's death in 1965, his son Jean-Marie took over, and today the 11.87-hectare estate is led by the founder's grandson Christophe Roumier, widely regarded as one of Burgundy's most gifted winemakers. The domaine's crown jewels are 1.6 hectares in Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru and a tiny 0.1-hectare parcel of Musigny acquired in 1978 — the latter so small that Christophe sometimes skips bottling in difficult vintages. Winemaking is meticulous: long cold soaks, partial whole-cluster fermentation, and minimal new oak preserve the silky, florally perfumed character of Chambolle. At auction, Roumier's Musigny and Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses are among the most coveted wines in all of Burgundy, routinely outperforming Grand Crus from lesser estates.

The domaine's 0.1-hectare Musigny parcel produces only around 300 bottles in good vintages — Christophe Roumier has withheld the wine entirely in years where quality did not meet his standard, making each release a collector's event.
Bonnes-Mares accounts for 1.6 hectares of the estate, among the largest individual holdings in this 15-hectare Grand Cru; per-bottle auction prices for top vintages regularly exceed $2,000.
Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses (0.4 ha) is often described as the finest Premier Cru in Burgundy; at auction it consistently outprices many Grand Crus from neighbouring villages.
Founded in 1924 via a marriage alliance, the domaine was built through métayage (sharecropping) rather than outright land purchase — a strategy that gave Roumier access to exceptional terroir before Burgundy land values became prohibitive.

In the Glass

Roumier's wines are the embodiment of Chambolle-Musigny's silky, feminine style — violet and wild strawberry on the nose, underpinned by a seductive mineral tension from the limestone-clay soils. Bonnes-Mares shows more structure and dark fruit than the village norm, while Musigny achieves a transparency and perfume that few wines on earth can match.
