About Corton-Charlemagne
Corton-Charlemagne is a white grand cru on the hill of Corton, shared by Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses and Ladoix-Serrigny in the Côte de Beaune. Only Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc are allowed. The hill once belonged to Charlemagne. Legend says white grapes were planted because his wife disliked red wine staining his beard, and a 'Clos le Charlemagne' is recorded in 1375. The best vines face south-east on the upper slopes, above the red Corton appellation. It makes about 300,000 bottles a year, more than two-thirds of all grand cru white from the Côte d'Or. Bonneau du Martray holds the biggest share.
