Gevrey-Chambertin

Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Gevrey-Chambertin is Burgundy's most voluminous grand cru village and the heartland of powerful Pinot Noir. With 7,500+ lots at auction averaging $342 per bottle, Gevrey spans the full quality spectrum: from village and premier cru wines under $100 to Chambertin and Clos de Bèze from Rousseau, Leroy, or DRC routinely surpassing $1,500. The village claims nine grands crus — more than any other single commune — including Chambertin, the vineyard Napoleon reportedly loved and the reference for Pinot Noir's power and longevity. Armand Rousseau dominates the auction hierarchy: his Chambertin and Clos Saint-Jacques are among the most actively traded Burgundy wines globally. The Clos Saint-Jacques premier cru, a de facto grand cru in quality, consistently trades above $500 per bottle. Gevrey's complexity is geological: brown soils over Premeaux limestone in the upper slope; richer, heavier clay on the lower slope; and a pronounced fault that creates the 'combe' zone behind the village. The combination of site diversity and the quality of producers — Trapet, Bachelet, Rossignol-Trapet, Denis Mortet — makes Gevrey the most versatile buying target in all Burgundy.

Gevrey-Chambertin
01

Chambertin grand cru (12.9 ha) was described by Napoleon Bonaparte as 'the king of wines' — he reportedly consumed a bottle per day, and campaign victories were celebrated with his personal Chambertin.

02

Armand Rousseau's Chambertin Clos de Bèze is Gevrey's most consistent auction performer, averaging $1,800+ per bottle for post-2000 vintages; his Clos Saint-Jacques regularly surpasses $600 per bottle despite premier cru status.

03

Gevrey has nine grands crus in one commune: Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Chapelle-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertin, Latriciéres-Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Mazoyéres-Chambertin, and Ruchottes-Chambertin.

04

The Clos Saint-Jacques premier cru, at 6.7 ha, is widely considered equal to grand cru — Rousseau, Fourrier, Esmonin, Jadot, and Bruno Clair each hold parcels — and auction prices regularly exceed those of lesser grands crus.

In the Glass

Gevrey-Chambertin Pinot Noir is the most structured in Burgundy: dark cherry, blackberry, and plum, with earth, game, tobacco, and truffle on the mid-palate. The tannins are firmer than Chambolle or Vosne, and the body is fuller, with a brooding power that requires 10–15 years of cellaring in grand cru examples. Village wines are more immediately expressive; grands crus in youth are austere and tight, rewarding patience with extraordinary complexity.
