Richebourg

Burgundy · France · Wine Auction Prices

Richebourg is among Burgundy's most powerful and opulent grands crus, producing Pinot Noir of unusual body and richness for the Côte de Nuits. The 8-hectare vineyard sits immediately north of Romanée-Conti and shares similar Premeaux limestone and clay-rich brown soils that produce deeply concentrated, complex wines. Domaine de la Romanée-Conti holds 3.5 hectares — the largest single parcel — and their Richebourg is typically the most powerful wine in the DRC lineup, often surpassing La Tâche in intensity. Domaine Leroy's holding (0.77 ha), farmed biodynamically with yields under 15 hl/ha, produces one of the most sought-after bottles in all Burgundy, trading above $3,000. Gros Frère et Sœur (almost 1.7 ha) and Méo-Camuzet complete the top tier. With 4,000 lots at auction, Richebourg is more available than many DRC monopoles but no less expensive from the top producers.

Richebourg
01

DRC's Richebourg is their most 'muscular' grand cru, with yields typically around 25 hl/ha — double that of their Romanée-Conti — making it comparatively accessible, yet auction prices still average $1,500–2,500 per bottle.

02

Leroy's Richebourg, from biodynamic vines with yields under 15 hl/ha, is among the three most expensive non-monopole wines in Burgundy, with recent vintages (2012, 2015) trading at $4,000–6,000 per bottle.

03

Richebourg's soils are unusually deep for a Vosne grand cru — up to 60–70cm of brown clay-limestone over Premeaux bedrock — explaining the wine's extra weight and body compared to the more graceful Romanée-Saint-Vivant nearby.

04

Méo-Camuzet's Richebourg, vinified by Henri Jayer from 1983 until his retirement, represents one of the most sought-after transitions in Burgundy history; pre-2004 bottles from this estate command premiums of 30–50% over post-Jayer vintages.

In the Glass

Richebourg is the most voluptuous Vosne grand cru: dark cherry, black plum, and violet, with a rich, almost opulent mid-palate that distinguishes it from the more ethereal Romanée-Saint-Vivant. Truffle, game, and dark spice emerge with age, and the tannins — while silky — are more assertive than Musigny or La Tâche. DRC's Richebourg shows power and precision; Leroy's adds extraordinary concentration; Gros Frère's is more supple and earlier-drinking.
