Italy · Wine Auction Prices

Tuscany sits at the centre of Italian fine wine, a region where DOCG regulations, volcanic soils, and centuries of estate tradition converge to produce some of the most reliably valuable bottles at auction. The Brunello di Montalcino DOCG — which mandates 100% Sangiovese Grosso (Brunetto clone) and five years minimum ageing for the standard bottling — is the single largest driver of Tuscan auction volume, accounting for over 12,800 tracked lots and averaging $182 per bottle across all formats. Soldera Case Basse commands a class of its own at $1,269 average, with the 2001 and 2010 Riserve reaching $8,000 per bottle. Along the Tyrrhenian coast, Bolgheri became the cradle of the so-called Super Tuscans: Sassicaia's 1968 vintage proved that Cabernet Sauvignon could thrive on the Maremma's well-drained gravels, and today Tenuta San Guido moves 2,390 auction lots at an average of $478. The broader Toscana IGT classification shelters Masseto, a single-vineyard Merlot averaging $920, alongside Tignanello and Solaia from Antinori. Chianti Classico's Gran Selezione tier — introduced in 2014 — has driven prices for estate-specific bottlings: Tenuta Tignanello's Marchese Antinori Riserva averages $499. The benchmark vintages for the region as a whole are 2010 (most lots at auction), 2015, and 2016, each combining warmth with the diurnal swings needed to retain Sangiovese's signature acidity.

Tuscany
01

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG requires 100% Sangiovese Grosso aged a minimum of five years; the Riserva tier demands six years, including at least two in oak — making it among Italy's most tightly regulated appellations.

02

Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido is Tuscany's most traded wine at auction, generating 2,390 tracked lots at an average of $478 per bottle; the 1985 vintage received a perfect 100-point score from Robert Parker in 1994.

03

Masseto, a Merlot from a single clay-rich plot in Bolgheri, averages $920 per bottle across 989 auction lots — making it among the most expensive Italian wines regularly traded at the major houses.

04

The Gran Selezione tier, added to Chianti Classico DOCG in 2014, requires single-vineyard sourcing and 30 months minimum ageing; it has lifted top-end prices with Marchese Antinori Riserva averaging $499 per bottle.

In the Glass

Tuscany is overwhelmingly a red wine region at auction: 30,704 of 30,989 tracked lots are red. Brunello di Montalcino delivers Sangiovese at its most structured — dried cherry, iron, leather, and dried rose petal with a backbone capable of 30+ years of cellaring. Bolgheri's Cabernet- and Merlot-based bottlings show cassis, graphite, and bay leaf with a richer, more approachable texture. Super Tuscans under the Toscana IGT blend Sangiovese with Cabernet or Merlot for a fuller, more international profile. White and rosé represent under 1% of auction volume.
