Chianti Classico

Tuscany · Italy · Wine Auction Prices

Chianti Classico is the historic heartland of Tuscan wine, occupying the hilly corridor between Florence and Siena at elevations ranging from 250 to 650 metres. The DOCG covers roughly 7,200 hectares under vine — exclusively within the original 1932 Chianti Classico delimitation — and mandates a minimum 80% Sangiovese in all bottlings. The appellation restructured its quality pyramid in 2014 by introducing Gran Selezione as the apex tier: single-vineyard or estate-selection wines requiring a minimum of 30 months ageing including at least three months in bottle. The effect on auction prices has been significant — Tenuta Tignanello's Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva, the most-traded Chianti Classico at auction with 478 lots, averages $499 per bottle, anchoring the top of the market. The zone accounts for 2,808 auction lots at an average of $146 per bottle, with a price ceiling of $5,843. Alberese and galestro soils — a mix of calcareous clay schist — give the wines their mineral backbone; the warmest zones around Castelnuovo Berardenga in the south produce richer, fuller wines, while the cooler northern communes around Panzano and Radda yield greater aromatic complexity. Felsina is the second-most-traded producer with 391 lots, including its village Berardenga bottlings and the single-vineyard Rancia Gran Selezione at $91 average. The 2015 and 2016 vintages are the current reference points, with 2019 considered exceptionally promising.

Chianti Classico
01

Chianti Classico DOCG spans 7,200 hectares between Florence and Siena; the 2014 introduction of Gran Selezione as a single-vineyard apex tier has driven premium pricing — Marchese Antinori Riserva averages $499 per bottle across 478 auction lots.

02

Galestro (calcareous clay schist) and alberese (compact limestone clay) are the dominant soils, contributing the mineral acidity and savoury grip characteristic of the best Chianti Classico at auction.

03

Chianti Classico must contain a minimum 80% Sangiovese; Gran Selezione requires 30 months total ageing and sourcing from a single vineyard or the estate's best-selection lots — the strictest tier in the DOCG.

04

The Gallo Nero (Black Rooster) consortium, founded in 1924, predates Chianti Classico's DOCG status (1984) and has represented the zone's producers for over a century; it now governs nearly 500 wineries across the appellation.

In the Glass

Chianti Classico is Sangiovese with added complexity from elevation and soil: sour cherry, dried herbs, tobacco, dried violet, and a distinctive iron-mineral note on the nose; medium-to-full body with firm, grippy tannins and a long savoury finish. Gran Selezione bottlings add layers of spice and dried fruit from extended oak ageing. All 2,808 tracked auction lots are red.
