San Giusto a Rentennano

San Giusto a Rentennano is a family-owned estate in Gaiole in Chianti, producing some of Tuscany's most compelling non-Brunello Sangiovese. The estate was purchased by the Martini di Cigala family in the 1950s and has been run by brothers Luca and Francesco since the 1980s. The flagship wine Percarlo, a 100% Sangiovese Supertuscan first produced in 1983, is one of the most important benchmarks for varietal Sangiovese outside Montalcino — consistently earning scores of 93–97 points from major critics. The estate also produces Le Baroncole, a classically structured Chianti Classico Riserva, and La Ricolma, an unusual and highly regarded Merlot. Across 496 auction lots, the estate averages $122 per bottle with prices reaching $1,076. Percarlo from outstanding vintages such as 2010, 2015, and 2016 regularly fetches $200–400 per bottle. The estate's commitment to Sangiovese — fermenting with indigenous yeasts, ageing in large Slavonian oak botti — produces wines of genuine complexity and ageing potential.

Percarlo, a 100% Sangiovese first produced in 1983, predates the rise of the Supertuscan category and remains one of the finest varietal Sangiovese wines outside Montalcino.
The 2010 and 2015 Percarlo each earned 97 points from James Suckling, with auction prices reaching $400–600 per bottle for these vintages.
La Ricolma, the estate's Merlot bottling, is produced in very small quantities and has attracted 96-point scores, making it one of Tuscany's most sought-after non-Sangiovese wines.
Total production across all labels is approximately 40,000–50,000 bottles annually, with Percarlo representing a tiny fraction of output — typically 3,000–5,000 bottles in good years.

In the Glass

San Giusto a Rentennano Sangiovese is built on precision and restraint: sour cherry, dried rose, iron, tobacco, and earthy leather with bright acidity and firm but fine tannins. Percarlo adds density and dark fruit concentration compared to the Chianti Classico expressions. La Ricolma shifts the profile entirely to plush Merlot — dark plum, mocha, and cedar. Wines are medium-to-full-bodied and reward significant cellaring.
