Masseto
Masseto is Italy's most celebrated and valuable pure Merlot wine, produced from a 7-hectare plot of blue clay soils within the Ornellaia estate in Bolgheri. The wine was first produced separately in 1986 and rapidly became one of Italy's greatest cult wines, with critics drawing comparisons to Pétrus for the combination of concentrated Merlot fruit and clay-derived complexity. Masseto became its own independent estate in 2019 when it was separated from Ornellaia under Frescobaldi ownership. The wine is extraordinarily rare — only about 30,000 bottles produced in most vintages — and commands prices among the highest of any Italian wine. The clay-rich volcanic soils of the Masseto plot give the wine a distinctive mineral depth, structure, and aging potential unusual for Merlot. The style is opulent but not heavy: velvet texture, plum and black cherry fruit, cedar, tobacco, and complex mineral notes that evolve magnificently over 15–25 years. Recent vintages such as 2015, 2016, and 2019 have received near-perfect scores from multiple critics. At auction, Masseto is the single most valuable Italian wine after single bottles of rare old Barolo and Brunello, with prices per bottle regularly exceeding €500.

In the Glass
Masseto is opulent and velvet-textured: concentrated plum, black cherry, cedar, tobacco, and dark chocolate with a distinctive mineral clay depth and an almost ineffable complexity. The tannins are exceptionally fine for such concentration, and great vintages evolve into wines of extraordinary beauty.
