Montevertine

Montevertine, the Radda in Chianti estate founded in 1967 by Sergio Manetti, is one of Tuscany's most artistically significant wine estates and the origin of one of Italy's greatest wines: Le Pergole Torte. Manetti, a steel industrialist, converted a dilapidated farmhouse in Chianti Classico's highest sub-zone and planted Sangiovese with Canaiolo and Colorino. His decision in 1977 to produce Le Pergole Torte—a 100% Sangiovese wine outside Chianti Classico DOC regulations—created both legal controversy and a critical sensation, setting the template for the Super Tuscan phenomenon. Under Sergio's son Martino Manetti, who took over in 2000, the estate has maintained strict traditionalist winemaking: long maceration, large Slavonian oak casks, and extended bottle aging before release, with Le Pergole Torte typically released 3–4 years after the vintage. With 940 lots averaging $311 per bottle and prices reaching $2,768, Montevertine sits firmly in the upper collector tier of Italian wine. Top auction vintages include 2015, 2010, 2004, and 1997.

Le Pergole Torte, first produced in 1977 as a 100% Sangiovese vino da tavola to avoid then-mandatory Chianti blending requirements, was one of the first Super Tuscan wines; the current Pergole Torte Riserva commands over $500 per bottle in exceptional vintages.
Montevertine's Radda in Chianti location at elevations of 450–600 meters—among the highest in the Chianti Classico zone—produces Sangiovese with natural high acidity, fine tannins, and mineral precision distinguishing it from lower-altitude Panzano or Castelnuovo expressions.
Martino Manetti conducts macerations of 25–35 days on Le Pergole Torte in open-top vats before aging in large Slavonian oak botti for 24+ months—a resolutely traditionalist approach differing markedly from the barriques used during Tuscany's modernist peak in the 1990s.
Total production at Montevertine is approximately 80,000 bottles annually, with Le Pergole Torte representing roughly 15,000–20,000 bottles; limited supply combined with the wine's legendary status drives secondary market prices to levels unusual for a non-DOCG estate wine.

In the Glass

Pure Sangiovese: Le Pergole Torte shows sour cherry, dried rose, iron, leather, and smoked herbs. The Radda altitude produces bracing natural acidity and fine-grained tannins—more angular and mineral than richer Panzano or Poggibonsi expressions. With age the wine develops extraordinary complexity: truffle, tobacco, dried fig, and aged Parmesan rind alongside the cherry core. Pian Del Ciampolo is lighter and more approachable with red berry, fresh herb, and easy tannins.
