About Chianti
Chianti is a Sangiovese-based red from central Tuscany, once known for its straw-covered 'fiasco' flask. A Chianti area was first defined in 1716, around Gaiole, Castellina and Radda. In the 19th century Bettino Ricasoli made Sangiovese the core of the blend, though the exact formula credited to him is not borne out by his letters. The zone was redrawn in 1932 into seven sub-areas and later grew to cover much of central Tuscany. Frustration with the 1967 DOC rules helped spark the Super Tuscan movement. Today Chianti must be at least 80% Sangiovese, and pure Sangiovese has been allowed since 1995.
