Domaine Leflaive

Domaine Leflaive is the dominant force in white Burgundy, producing the benchmark bottles from Puligny-Montrachet with an authority matched only by Coche-Dury in the Meursault corridor. The estate was founded by Joseph Leflaive in the early 20th century, and it was his granddaughter Anne-Claude Leflaive who transformed it into a world reference during her tenure from 1990 until her death in 2015 — converting fully to biodynamic viticulture in 1997 and raising standards across the 25-hectare estate. The domaine's portfolio includes four of the most prestigious Grand Crus in Puligny: Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, and a parcel of Le Montrachet itself. Under Anne-Claude's direction, Leflaive wines acquired a precision and mineral intensity that made them definitive Côte de Beaune Chardonnay. The current team — led by Brice de la Morandière — maintains both the biodynamic approach and the house style: restrained new oak, long elevage on fine lees, and bottling without filtration for the Grand Crus. At auction, Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles are among the most reliably bid-upon white Burgundies across all houses.

Anne-Claude Leflaive converted the entire 25-hectare estate to biodynamic viticulture in 1997, making Domaine Leflaive one of the earliest high-profile adopters in Burgundy.
The domaine's Montrachet parcel is just 0.08 hectares — producing roughly 200 bottles per year — making it the rarest allocated Grand Cru in the Leflaive portfolio.
Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet is considered by many critics the definitive expression of the Grand Cru: tightly wound mineral tension from young vines gradually opening to hazelnut and brioche over 10–15 years.
Puligny-Montrachet Les Pucelles is the domaine's 'entry point' Premier Cru and yet consistently outperforms many rivals' Grand Crus at blind tasting; it trades at 3–4× the village Puligny price at auction.

In the Glass

Leflaive whites are defined by tension and precision — less opulent than Meursault, more mineral and tightly coiled. Chevalier-Montrachet is the most austere: green apple, flint, and a chalky minerality that opens slowly with age. Bâtard-Montrachet is richer, adding hazelnut and cream. Les Pucelles sits between them — floral on the nose, stony and long on the palate.
