United States · Wine Auction Prices

California is the world's most commercially significant New World wine region and one of the most dynamic at auction, with 112,000+ lots traded at an average of $198 per bottle. The state spans nine distinct growing zones — from the fog-cooled Sonoma Coast and Anderson Valley in the north to the sun-drenched Sta. Rita Hills in the south — each producing wines of dramatically different character. Napa Valley commands the auction premium: Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, and Opus One regularly eclipse $3,000 per bottle, while cult Cabernets from Oakville and Rutherford anchor the mid-market. In Sonoma, Williams Selyem and Kosta Browne built the template for Russian River Valley Pinot Noir that now attracts serious collector attention. Sine Qua Non's Rhône-varietal bottlings from Santa Barbara County trade at Burgundy grand cru prices despite tiny production. The diversity of California's auction market is unmatched: Cabernet Sauvignon dominates in both volume and headline prices, while Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Rhône varieties each sustain active collector communities. The state's pioneering winemakers — Robert Mondavi, Warren Winiarski, Joe Heitz — established California's legitimacy in the 1970s Paris Tasting, and the region has not looked back.

California
01

The 1976 Paris Tasting, where Stag's Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. 1973 and Chateau Montelena Chardonnay 1973 defeated French wines in blind tasting, established California as a world-class wine region.

02

Napa Valley has the highest average auction price of any New World region, with cult Cabernets from Screaming Eagle, Harlan Estate, and Opus One regularly trading above $3,000 per bottle.

03

California's certified sustainable, organic, and biodynamic acreage now exceeds 100,000 acres — the largest of any U.S. state — with Mendocino County holding the highest concentration.

04

The state produces over 85% of all U.S. wine by volume, yet the auction market is dominated by fewer than 200 boutique producers accounting for under 5% of total production.

In the Glass

California's dominant auction style is Cabernet Sauvignon: full-bodied, richly textured, with cassis, dark plum, cedar, and often a lush overlay of new oak from the Napa Valley heartland. Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley Pinot Noir delivers red cherry, pomegranate, and forest floor with silky tannin. Chardonnay ranges from the creamy, barrel-fermented Kistler style to the leaner, mineral-driven Aubert. Rhône varieties from Santa Barbara show white pepper, olive, and garrigue complexity.
