About Howell Mountain
Howell Mountain was Napa Valley's second sub-appellation, established in December 1983. It lies in the Vaca Range on the valley's north-eastern side, around Angwin and above St. Helena, and covers only vineyards at or above 1,400 feet. Charles Krug planted about 100 acres here in the 1880s. W. Keyes later made Howell Mountain famous, winning medals at the 1900 Paris Exposition. Pioneering vintners revived its old properties from the 1960s. About 600 acres are planted, mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Zinfandel.
