About Paso Robles
Paso Robles is a large AVA in northern San Luis Obispo County, established in October 1983 after a petition led by Martin Brothers Winery, and enlarged in 1996 and 2009. The name comes from the Spanish 'El Paso de Robles', the pass of the oaks. Spanish missionaries brought vines in the late 18th century, and the pianist Ignacy Paderewski later planted a vineyard on his ranch. Zinfandel is the area's heritage grape, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon, and Rhône varieties have spread since the 1980s. The AVA now has eleven sub-AVAs, including Adelaida District and Willow Creek District.
