About Alexander Valley
Alexander Valley is an AVA in north-eastern Sonoma County, just north of Healdsburg. It was established in October 1984 after rival petitions from growers in the north and south of the valley. Its soils range from sandy and silt loams to clay with volcanic ash. It is warmer than the neighbouring Russian River Valley. Rodney Strong was among the first to see the valley's potential, and his 1974 Cabernet Sauvignon was the county's first from a single vineyard. Jordan, Simi, Murphy-Goode and Chateau St. Jean were among the producers behind the AVA petition. About 15,000 acres are planted to a wide range of grapes.
