About North Coast
North Coast is a very large multi-county AVA, created in September 1983, that covers grape-growing land in six counties north of San Francisco: Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Napa, Sonoma and Solano. It takes in more than three million acres and contains many smaller appellations, among them Napa Valley, Los Carneros, Howell Mountain, Knights Valley and Mendocino. What links them is weather shaped by Pacific fog and breezes. The infobox lists a long range of grapes, from Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Pinot noir to Zinfandel and Sauvignon blanc.
