About Santa Maria Valley
Santa Maria Valley was approved in August 1981 as only the third AVA in the United States. It lies mostly in Santa Barbara County and crosses the Cuyama River into the southern tip of San Luis Obispo County. The valley opens from east to west, so cool winds and fog flow in freely from the Pacific and settle in the low ground. The result is a mild climate with a long growing season. Modern viticulture began in 1964 with more than 100 acres of new vines. The valley's Pinot Noir and Chardonnay rank among California's finest.
