About Fort Ross-Seaview
Fort Ross-Seaview is a coastal AVA in Sonoma County, between Jenner and Sea Ranch, about 65 miles north-north-west of San Francisco. It is defined by its higher elevations above the Pacific. It was established in December 2011 on a petition backed by David Hirsch of Hirsch Vineyards, and it sits within the larger Sonoma Coast AVA. Russian settlers at Fort Ross first planted vines here. The modern vineyards date from the 1970s, when Hirsch and other growers began selling fruit to wineries in Sonoma and Santa Cruz. About 500 acres are planted, on gravelly loam over metamorphic rock, mainly to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
