About Russian River Valley
Russian River Valley is a Sonoma County AVA established in October 1983 and enlarged several times since, most recently in 2011. It runs roughly from Sebastopol and Santa Rosa north to Forestville and Healdsburg. Morning fog from the Pacific, some of it through the Petaluma Gap, keeps the valley cool. Nights can be 35–40°F cooler than days, which gives a long, slow ripening. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the specialities, for both still and sparkling wine. Sandy Goldridge soil carries some of the best-regarded vineyards. Gallo and Kendall-Jackson both invested heavily here.
