Martinelli

Martinelli Winery in the Russian River Valley, operated by the Martinelli family since the 1980s, is one of Sonoma's most distinctive small producers, farming some of the most extremely steep vineyard terrain in California. The Jackass Vineyard—a pre-Prohibition Zinfandel planting on a slope so steep it originally required mules for farming—is the estate's most famous site, producing Zinfandel of extraordinary concentration. The estate also farms old-vine Zinfandel in the Giuseppe & Luisa block and Bondi Home Ranch for Pinot Noir. Water Trough Pinot Noir from Bondi Home Ranch and Lolita Ranch Pinot Noir are the estate's leading Pinot bottlings. At auction, 798 lots average $56 per bottle with a ceiling of $923—modest pricing reflecting the estate's niche following among Zinfandel and old-vine enthusiasts rather than the broader collector market. The 2003 vintage tops the auction database. Winemaker Helen Turley worked with Martinelli in the 1990s and early 2000s, driving significant critical attention before departing. The Bella Chardonnay and Martinelli Road Chardonnay represent the estate's white wine program.

Jackass Vineyard, planted before Prohibition (likely 1880s–1900s) on a 60–70% grade slope in the Russian River Valley, is one of California's steepest farmed vineyards; original mule-drawn equipment gave way to hand harvesting, with the slope contributing to natural low yields and extreme vine stress that concentrates Zinfandel fruit.
Helen Turley's winemaking at Martinelli in the 1990s drove the estate's early critical recognition; she produced wines from Jackass Vineyard that received 97–100 point scores, briefly establishing Martinelli Zinfandel alongside Kistler Chardonnay and Marcassin Pinot Noir in California's top critical tier.
Giuseppe & Luisa Zinfandel, named for the family patriarch and matriarch, draws from another pre-Prohibition block with vines estimated at over 100 years old—among the oldest documented Zinfandel plantings still in commercial production in California.
Bondi Home Ranch Water Trough Pinot Noir averages well above $100 per bottle at auction—nearly double the $56 portfolio average—reflecting the site's reputation as one of the Russian River Valley's premier Pinot Noir vineyards with tight clay-based soils producing wines of exceptional density.

In the Glass

The portfolio splits between old-vine Zinfandel and Russian River Pinot Noir. Jackass Vineyard Zinfandel is the extreme expression: blackberry jam, cracked pepper, dried fig, dark chocolate, and iron at 15–16% alcohol, dense and concentrated. Giuseppe & Luisa is similar with added dried herb character. Pinot Noir from Bondi Home Ranch is dark and structured—black cherry, earth, and tobacco—with good grip and aging potential. Chardonnay shows full-bodied richness: ripe pear, toasted oak, and creamy lees texture.
