About Sonoma Mountain
Sonoma Mountain is a small hillside AVA in southern Sonoma County, centred on the 2,463-foot peak of the same name. It lies along the Valley of the Moon's western side and includes the town of Glen Ellen. It was established in January 1985 after a petition from local grower David Steiner. Jackson Temple planted its first vineyards in 1862 and built a winery on what is now the Jack London Ranch. The AVA covers about 5,000 acres, with roughly 800 under vine. The soils are red loams and gravelly mountain soils.
