About Santa Ynez Valley
Santa Ynez Valley, along the Santa Ynez River in Santa Barbara County, became an AVA in May 1983 following a petition from Firestone Vineyard in Los Olivos. The Purisima Hills and San Rafael Mountains to the north and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the south form a long east–west valley. That shape lets ocean air cool the western end, while the east is warmer. Vineyards run from about 200 feet near the river to 1,300 feet in the foothills. The valley has the county's densest cluster of wineries and contains Sta. Rita Hills, Happy Canyon, Ballard Canyon and Los Olivos District.
