About Anderson Valley
Anderson Valley is an AVA in western Mendocino County along the Navarro River watershed, established in August 1983. It became part of the wider Mendocino AVA in 1984. The valley is named after Walter Anderson, who settled there in 1852, and grapes followed soon after; the DuPratt Vineyard, planted in 1916, survives. It is cooler and wetter than inland Mendocino. Today about 2,450 acres are planted across 100 or so vineyards. They are best known for Pinot Noir and sparkling wine, with Alsace varieties such as Gewürztraminer and Riesling also grown.
