About Los Carneros
Los Carneros, or simply Carneros, is an AVA straddling southern Napa and Sonoma counties just north of San Pablo Bay. It was established in August 1983 on a petition from Beaulieu Vineyard. Cool bay winds make it one of the region's coolest areas, and Louis Martini helped establish it as a cool-climate district. In the 1980s Domaine Chandon, Domaine Carneros, Gloria Ferrer, Mumm Napa and Codorníu invested here, making it a centre of California sparkling wine. Its Chardonnay is noted for high acidity compared with the riper Chardonnays of warmer Napa and Sonoma, and Pinot Noir is the other key grape. About 10,000 acres are planted on clay soils.
