About Santa Cruz Mountains
Santa Cruz Mountains, established in December 1981, spans parts of Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Mateo counties. It was among the first AVAs defined by mountain terrain, with boundaries drawn along elevation and the coastal fog line. Ocean breezes and bay influence create many microclimates. Over 200 small vineyards cover about 1,500 acres, split roughly equally between Pinot noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and others. Pioneers here included Paul Masson and Martin Ray. Ridge's 1971 Monte Bello Cabernet placed fifth at the 1976 Judgment of Paris and won the 2006 anniversary re-tastings.
