Kathryn Kennedy
Kathryn Kennedy Winery is a historic Saratoga, California estate in the Santa Cruz Mountains, producing one of the state's most acclaimed single-vineyard Cabernet Sauvignons from the estate's 8-acre vineyard near the floor of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Kathryn Kennedy planted her vineyard in 1973 when few believed Saratoga could produce serious Cabernet, and the resulting wine became one of California's most influential mountain Cabernets through the 1980s and 1990s. The winery now operates under her son Marty Mathis. Production is tiny — roughly 500 cases of the estate Cabernet Sauvignon annually — making it one of the most scarce serious California Cabernets available. At auction, prices average $101 per bottle across 121 lots, with a range from $32 to $259 that is remarkably tight, suggesting consistent collector confidence across vintages. The wine scores 90–95 regularly from Wine Spectator and represents exceptional value given its historical significance and scarcity.

In the Glass
Kathryn Kennedy Estate Cabernet is classic Santa Cruz Mountains: restrained dark fruit, cedar, dried herbs, and iron minerality from the mountain soil, with the high natural acidity and firm tannins characteristic of mountain California Cabernet. The wine is not immediately approachable — it demands 8–12 years to show its best — but develops impressive complexity and longevity.
