About Calistoga
Calistoga is a Napa Valley sub-AVA in the valley's north-western corner. It was established in December 2009 on a petition led by Bo Barrett of Chateau Montelena. The name dates from the 1860s, when Sam Brannan founded the resort town. Vines were first planted in 1862, and by 1880 Calistoga was counted as a separate district. Its soils sit almost entirely on volcanic bedrock. Very hot days and cool nights, cooled by breezes from the Russian River, give wide daily temperature swings that build colour and flavour while keeping acidity. Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel are among its grapes.
