About Sonoma Valley
Sonoma Valley, approved in December 1981, was Sonoma County's first AVA. It lies between the Mayacamas Mountains to the east and the Sonoma Mountains to the west, which shelter it from the wet, cool Pacific. The page gives 'Valley of the Moon' as the meaning of 'Sonoma' in a local indigenous dialect. In 1857 Agoston Haraszthy founded Buena Vista here, one of California's first successful commercial wineries. Julius Dresel later pioneered grafting vinifera onto disease-resistant native rootstock. About 13,000 acres are planted, and the AVA contains Sonoma Mountain, Bennett Valley, Moon Mountain District and part of Carneros.
