About Mendocino County
Mendocino County, part of the North Coast AVA, is one of California's northernmost and most climatically varied wine regions. The Mendocino Range splits it into two climate zones. It has about a dozen AVAs, Anderson Valley among them, and it is a leader in organic grapes, with nearly a quarter of its vineyards farmed organically. Farmers returning from the Gold Rush planted the first vineyards in Redwood Valley in the 1850s. Parducci, founded in 1931, is the county's oldest continuously operating winery, and Fetzer, founded in 1968, became its largest. Redwood Valley is known for spicy Zinfandel and McDowell Valley for old-vine Grenache and Syrah.
