About Santa Barbara County
Santa Barbara County is a county-level appellation; in US law county names count as origins without TTB registration. Vines arrived with Spanish missionaries in the late 18th century. The modern revival began with Pierre Lafond's Santa Barbara Winery in 1962, and pioneers such as Firestone, Sanford, Rancho Sisquoc and Zaca Mesa followed. Its Santa Ynez and San Rafael mountains run east–west, funnelling Pacific fog and cool air inland and lengthening the season. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir made its name, and Rhône grapes such as Syrah and Viognier are rising. The 2004 film Sideways gave the region wide publicity.
