About Santa Lucia Highlands
Santa Lucia Highlands is an AVA on the eastern flank of the Santa Lucia range in central Monterey County, entirely within the Monterey AVA. It was established in 1992 and its border with Arroyo Seco was adjusted in 2021. Missionaries planted vines here in the late 18th century, but the modern industry began in the 1970s. Vineyards climb to about 1,200 feet on an alluvial terrace above the Salinas Valley floor. Mornings bring fog and breezes off Monterey Bay, and afternoons are warm with southern exposure. About half the vineyards grow Pinot noir.
