About Monterey
The Monterey AVA, recognised in July 1984, covers much of eastern Monterey County. It runs about 100 miles from Monterey Bay down the Salinas Valley, framed by the Santa Lucia, Sierra de Salinas and Gabilan ranges, to the edge of Paso Robles. Around 40,000 acres are planted, and it contains five smaller AVAs, including the Santa Lucia Highlands and Arroyo Seco. Franciscan friars planted the first vines at the missions of Monterey, Soledad and Jolon from 1770. In the 1976 Paris tasting, Chalone Vineyard's 1974 Chardonnay placed third among the whites.
