About Stags Leap District
Stags Leap District is a small Napa Valley sub-AVA directly east of Yountville, about seven miles north of Napa. It was established in January 1989 after two petitions dating from 1985. Grapes were first planted here in 1872, and Richard Steltzner and Bernard Portet settled in the 1960s, drawn by steady breezes and volcanic soils. Its fame came early: Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' 1973 Cabernet, grown in the area, took first place among the reds at the 1976 Paris tasting. About half of its 2,550 acres are planted, mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon.
