About Chateau Montelena

Chateau Montelena is at the northern end of Napa Valley, just beyond Calistoga, below Mount Saint Helena. Rope merchant Alfred Tubbs bought the land in 1882, and by 1896 it was one of the valley's largest wineries. Winemaking stopped with Prohibition. After a period under the Frank family, who created the Chinese garden and Jade Lake, Lee Paschich and partners including Jim Barrett bought the property in 1968. Barrett replanted it and restarted production in 1972 with Mike Grgich as winemaker. The 1973 Chardonnay won the white-wine section of the 1976 Judgment of Paris, a story later dramatised in Bottle Shock.
